张孝友是五十年代末中央美术学院油画系五年制本科毕业的 ，是吴作人、董希文、王式廓先生的学生 。他用功刻苦 ，成绩优异 ，当年曾为中国历史博物馆创作革命历史画 。我曾和他二人去江西老区走遍许多地方 ，收集创作素材 。中央工艺美术学院成立不久 ，他就分配去任教了 ，三十七年门牆桃李 。由於工作需要 ，他教了许多门学科 。现在他是清华大学美术学院的中国画教授 。他一直是学贯中西 ，既善於从古人传统中学习 ，又能把过去学到的西画技法融会贯通的大家 。他的工笔人物 、山水画 ，特别是楼阁界画 ，十分精到 ;构图、技巧都有创新，有很强的感染力，把一个濒於失传的画种重新开拓出来，走着别人没走过的路 ，创自己的风格 ，应是难能可贵的。

张孝友是一位知识 、修养很全面的艺术家 。有不少的画家艺术技巧很高 ，但是对艺术 、文史 、书画等方面的知识比较欠缺 ，张孝友从小受到这方面的家庭熏陶 ，並且很努力钻研 ，在这方面善於学习 、善於研究 ，所以他不但艺术修养很高 ，艺术技巧也很高 ，我认为这两者结合是他创作的最大特点 。
他的画很工整 ，很严谨 ，但是他又非常注意艺术的表现力 。画工整的画 ，特别是界画 ，建筑楼台的界画 ，容易拘谨 ，比较容易放不开 ，而且佈局上或者在笔墨上 ，往往不是说能很有情韻 、有趣味 、有格调 ，特别在格调上容易有俗的成份 。但是由於张孝友他具有艺术史的知识 ，有文学艺术方面的修养 ，他把握得比较好 ，他在表现这种工笔画方面 ，有严谨的一面 ，有放松的一面 ，所以他的画整体上虚实关係处理得相当好 ，他的画很有看头 ，因为他有笔墨的功力 。他确实是受了古代绘画的影响 ，中国的工笔画 、兼工兼写的绘画 、写意绘画都有很深的传统 ，张孝友把这些综合起来 ，吸收成为自己的营养 ，把这方面的修养都用在他的画上去了 ，所以他的画相当有功力 ，相当有修养 ，相当有格调 。

Zhang Xiaoyou was an Oil Painting graduate of the Central Fine Arts Academy in the late 1950s, tutored by Mr. Wu Zuoren, Mr. Dong Xiwen and Mr. Wang Shiguo. He was a hard working, all-A student. I still recalled the memorable journey we took together over some of the most devastated areas in Jiangxi Province for sketches in preparation of the commission from China Revolutionary History Museum. Zhang got a job offer from the Central Academy of arts and design upon the Academy's inauguration and started a 37 years career as an art educator in a variety of disciplines. Now a Tsinghua Professor of Chinese Painting, Zhang has a thorough knowledge of the Western and Chinese cultures. He was inspired by both Chinese tradition and the Western skills. His Pavilion-themed Ruler Painting successfully engages the spectators with innovation on skills and compositions. An art is saved from extinction because of his courage to take untaken road and the loyalty to one's art pursuits.

Unlike some of his peers, who are in need of more artistic exposures despite of their know-how, Zhang Xiaoyou is an all round artist with comprehensive knowledge. His works are good examples of the balance between skills and knowledge. For that, one should give credits not only to his family background, but his hard work and dedication to art since as Zhang is well known for his strictness about practices and cultivation.
He uses neat and prudent touches but always keeps an eye on the expressiveness of the painting. It's not unusual that Ruler Painting, in particular the Pavilion-themed ones, gets from prudent to overcautious. Accordingly, the composition and colors may turn rigid and carry little fun, not to mention the risk of a painting falling into a craft work. But Zhang's intelligence on art history and other artistic forms saves him the risk. He balances tightness with light touches and cautiously keeps room for highlights. He is a well trained painter with an excellent control on brushes. And his exposure to the Chinese painting tradition enables him to skillfully intertwine Gongbi skills into freehand brushes and calligraphy. His creation carries clear traces of the practices and studies over decades with outstanding aesthetic tastes.
